Is Fortnite Still Fortnite Without Building?

Anyone who knows anything about Fortnite knows that it is one of the most popular battle royale games in existence, and the thing that makes it unique from other games (aside from the animation and amazing skins) is the building. In the game you collect materials and can build a fort - hence the name - to help aid you to get a win. You can create cover, traps, and all other creative buildings within the game. So what happens when you take that all away?

There has been controversy with the building aspect of Fortnite. But honestly, it is less about the building aspect and more about the matchmaking, which is a whole different story. However, I think that this controversy is a reason that the developers decided to try out a no-building mode. At the beginning of this season, the story was that the "Resistance" took away the player's ability to build, and the players are to fight to restore building.

At the very beginning of the season, there was only the no-building mode option. Every player was forced to play the game without building. Granted, the developers did add a sprinting and vaulting mechanic to add something unique to the game. It was great for people who are not so good at building. They were able to play on a more even field because they did not have to worry about extreme builders trapping them. It relied mostly on shooting skills and a bit of maneuvering away from attacks. However, for players who were the said "extreme builders" or even just regular players who relied heavily on building (such as myself), this change proved to be a difficult adjustment.

I will admit, at first, I was not excited about building being forcibly removed. I struggled as when I got attacked, my muscle memory would kick in and I would try to build but nothing would happen. It was frustrating at first because I felt like I would never get used to it and would just lose all of my battles. However, like any other game, practice makes perfect, and I eventually was able to even get a few wins without relying on my building. It was a nice change of pace, as it was not just the average game where muscle memory is the main driver. I had to come up with new strategies and was allowed to come up with ones that had not been possible before. For example, I was able to climb up on roofs without leaving a trail of buildings behind me, which helped me hide and sneak up on enemies better.

I was worried however that this would be the norm for the entire season. Although the change was fun, I thoroughly enjoy the traditional building of Fortnite. I was pleasantly surprised to find that in the latest update, they brought the option to play with or without building. This was the perfect move in my opinion because it allowed for a variety for all players. I will say that I think it was fun that we were required to play with no building for a bit, but I am certainly glad to have my normal modes back.
